Alex Ovechkin To Retire From NHL After 2026-27 Season

Legendary Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin announced today that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL.

Ovechkin was previously reported to be considering retirement this past summer, but elected to return to Washington. Now, there is no more mystery about when Ovechkin will bring an end to his career at the game’s highest level.

As part of this announcement, Ovechkin issued a statement to the public, which reads:

My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL. I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it’s the right decision.

It was important for me to make this announcement before our first home game, so I have the chance to thank all the people around the game, everyone who has been so important to me and my family and helped me through good times and tough losses. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything I have in my life without them.

I am excited about this season with my teammates, and we will do everything we can to make this year special. I am going to enjoy every moment with my family, my boys, our fans and everyone who has been part of my hockey career.

See you Wednesday, babes!

The announcement sets a clear ending point to the career of one of the game’s all-time great goal scorers. While it’s obviously unknown when Ovechkin’s final game will actually be – he could end the season hoisting the Stanley Cup for the second time in his career, or an unforeseen circumstance such as an injury could push the timeline forward – what is clear is that by the time Capitals training camp rolls around next fall, the franchise’s most consistent face of the past two decades will not be hitting the ice.

It’s difficult to overstate just how important Ovechkin is to the Capitals, both presently and historically. Historically, he is unquestionably the franchise’s all-time greatest player.

The No. 1 pick at the 2004 draft passed Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, and he is currently the only player in NHL history to cross 900 goals.

While he’ll fall just short of 1000 goals for his career (he would need to score a career-high 71 goals at the age of 41), he’s still set a standard for excellence in goal scoring that few players in history can say they rival.

Beyond his individual accolades, Ovechkin has also been the face of the most successful era in Capitals history. Washington has been a consistent playoff team throughout Ovechkin’s career, and he’s missed the playoffs just five times.

For a large portion of Ovechkin’s career, much of the conversation about him departed from his individual brilliance, and became increasingly focused on Washington’s inability to mount a serious Stanley Cup push.

They were continually among the game’s best regular-season teams, especially once Barry Trotz took over as head coach, but would routinely fall short in the playoffs. Most pressingly, Ovechkin and the Capitals lost multiple second-round battles against their arch-rival Pittsburgh Penguins, led by superstar Sidney Crosby.

But in 2018, Ovechkin and the Capitals finally found a way to defeat the Penguins in a second-round series. Once Ovechkin was able to get past the team that had haunted many springs in years past – as well as the generational player he had spent his career most frequently compared to – he didn’t look back. Washington was able to defeat a strong Tampa Bay Lightning team in the Eastern Conference Final, and then won the Stanley Cup in five games against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Capitals fans will not soon forget the raw emotion that poured out of Ovechkin as he finally gripped the Stanley Cup. Now, thanks to this announcement, it’s time for Washington itself to show its emotion. Ovechkin has given the organization and its fans a large amount of advance notice that his time in the NHL is coming to an end. As a result, it seems the 2026-27 Capitals season has just become something of a farewell tour for the franchise’s all-time greatest talent.

Finally, though, it should be noted that Ovechkin only announced the end to his NHL career, and not a full retirement. Nothing is confirmed at this point, to be clear, but it seems reasonable to believe that his phrasing is completely intentional. While Capitals fans are going to say goodbye to Ovechkin this season, it does seem entirely possible that his playing career extends a little longer, in the KHL.
